Geoff Maris – Obituary

A number of obituaries which were included on the original Hampshire Chess Association website are being added to the website.

Geoff Maris

Geoff Mairis, who sadly passed away on Thursday 4th March 1997, was a regular player for Fair Oak for a number of years, often representing both their A and B team in the same season. Only three days before his death he had played for the Fair Oak team against Southern B and had won his game.

He also was the catalyst for the Dismas centre for the homeless, entering a team in the Southampton Chess League, and although that team withdrew from the League after four years, they won a trophy in their first season and many of its members derived enormous benefit from their participation in the League.

He also supported the chess charity events that took place at the Swan Centre and will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
