Sunil Weeramantry

Tony Williams pointed me in the direction of Lex Fridman podcast with Hikaru Nakamura in which he briefly mentions his stepfather Sunil Weeramantry’s time at Southampton University. To save you time, as it is a long interview, this part is around the 2 hours 40 minute mark.

Sunil played 12 times for the Hampshire County team normally on the top three boards between 1970 and 1974 but was also active in the Hampshire League as well as other chess activities in the UK. He was graded at 200 ECF and his opponents included Sir Philip Stuart Milner-Barry. Some of his results are included in the 1972/73 season article.

    1. I was in the university chess club at the same time as Sunil. I visited his room in the Swaythling halls once. Lots of chess books open, not too many Law books which he was supposed to be studying. I think he never finished his degree as chess took over. Nice bloke but a total chess addict.
