In my ongoing attempt to write articles on the Hampshire Individual Chess Championships I have reproduced / updated my original one on the 2001 Congress. This was a battle between a number of the top local players and an upcoming junior Thomas Rendle.
Alongside the 2017 Hampshire Individual Championship, the Major and Minor Congresses were held. The Minor had the largest number of entries with 28 players participating. Hampshire had been playing in the SCCU since 1894, but the Montague Jones Cup was introduced in 1925. This article looks at Hampshire’s second win of this Cup in 1929/30 and their five County Chess matches in the season.
Very surprising that this was over 30 years ago! But Hampshire reached the Open National Chess Finals in the 1991/92 season where they met Staffordshire. The Hampshire County chess team this season was probably as strong as they have ever been with numerous ECF 200 (2200) graded players in the team for matches.
