Southampton Chess Publications

In the Hampshire Chess Archives there were two booklets from the 1980’s which I have scanned and made available.

Southampton Chess Club Centenary Booklet – 1983

The first booklet is from 1983, celebrating the centenary of the Southampton Chess Club and was completed by HL Parsons, who along with Southampton Chess Club Secretary was the Hampshire County Match Captain. This booklet details the history of the Southampton Chess Club, their achievements as well as information on notable players past and present.

There were players mentioned in the booklet that I played with including John Patience, Peter Marshall, Les Allen, Iain Stenhouse, David Bell and Tony Summers (mild mannered dentist until he sat down at the chess board, when he turned into a maniac). An interesting read and as the booklet states 1883 was really the re-introduction of the Southampton Chess club as there was a previous club under the same name.

British Chess Championship – 1986

The second booklet is the program from the 1986 British Chess Championship which was held in Southampton from 28th July to August 1986 and was won by Jonathan Speelman after a three way tie.

A number of local players participated in the Championship, so look out for these. The list of participants included in the booklet would not be 100% accurate as this was produced before the championship, check the Britbase information above for details of the participants and winners.

Do you have any old booklets related to Hampshire Chess? For example in 1976 the British Championship was held in Portsmouth and I have very little on this, and if you have anything this would be of great interest to me.

Please do get in touch if you have anything?
