John H Jones – Chess Games

I hope to publish a number of games of Hampshire chess players, although to help me complete this input from readers would be appreciated. The first of these is on John H Jones.

If you played John and have any games, please do supply. In addition, I would welcome game collections from Hampshire players.

John Henry Jones’ Chess Games

I was lucky enough to be supplied annotated games from John, who had his own personal style in writing, as well as the way he played Chess (and Bridge). The majority of the games he supplied were short and exciting, Arthur Brameld also supplied additional games from his records. I also sneaked in my two games against John, although these were when John had less interest in chess.

I was not sure how to present these games and have settled on some in the normal chess viewer I use, which is RPB Chessboard; and all of them in Chessbase viewer. The reason for this is that RPB only allows one game at a time, but is in my view easier to use. I have also included all the games to be downloaded.

I really do recommend playing through the games John annotated, a little bit liberal with the truth (these were done without computer assistance) but some amazing moves were played.

Geoffrey Daw

I am not sure when this game was played and although John mentions that his opponent had just won the Hampshire Individual, this was not the case. Geoffrey never won the Hampshire Individual, although he finished equal 2nd in 1966. It is more likely that Geoffrey had played and had performed well in the Hampshire Individual before this game. Geoffrey was a strong county player in his prime, normally in the middle order, but sometimes on the top boards.

In this game though he seemed to be flummoxed by John’s approach and as John states he had resigned before others who had started.

Stuart Philip Milner Barry

This was some scalp, even though Stuart Milner Barry was in his mid 60’s he was still strong enough to finish equal 2nd in the BCF Major Open this year. As well as being known as a code breaker at Bletchley Park he was 2nd in the 1953 British Chess Championship, and represented England in four Olympiad’s.

John has a great story leading into the game where he had beaten Australian FM Max Fuller.

Martin Buckley

In this game John shows how it is best to be careful when playing an opponent who was in your team the previous week, and was aware enough to follow your game and prepare the line for when you meet.
