Hampshire played their second official county match against Sussex on the 20th April 1889. I am attempting to add as many of the Hampshire County Chess Results I have, broken down by year. This friendly match took place in Portsmouth.
I covered the first two matches in a larger post which includes additional information on the Hampshire Chess creation and games from the second match in 1889. This fuller post provides additional information and I would recommend reading that post to get a better feel for these first important key matches for Hampshire Chess.
For the record of Hampshire County matches and links to any articles I have written the table on the Hampshire County Chess Matches page will detail these. The Hampshire County Chess History page summaries the leagues Hampshire have played in and the successes Hampshire have achieved. Both of these are available from the menu at the top of the site as well.
Hampshire – Sussex 20 April 1889 – Portsmouth
The match took place on the 20th April 1889 and as per the previous match in 1889 it was held in Portsmouth. You will notice that some players played one game whilst others played two. Although this was usual at this time it was identified as an issue by the Hampshire team as if the 2nd games were not held Hampshire would have come out on top.
Subsequent matches against Sussex and Surrey would be played as just one game per person, although other friendlies against counties such as Wiltshire would continue to allow more than one game per person. I think the results from the matches against Sussex and Surrey were probably more significant for these three counties
Whereas Hampshire had won the first match, this time Sussex came out narrowly on top scoring 11 points to Hampshire 10. As per the Hampshire Independent you can see that the second game played by some players was something Hampshire requested, whereas Sussex preferred just the one game. In hindsight from Hampshire’s viewpoint this proved a bad decision, as if left to the one game they would have won the match!
