As well as the Open Under 18 Championship and Under 16 Championships, which was won by Michael Pagden and AG Bright there were two championships for Girls, these covered the U18 and U14 titles. The other championship also had entries from girls, with Jane Seymour coming third.in the U18 and 6th in the U16.
The two championships were mentioned in my original posts above, but I had failed to get back to publishing them. I was reminded by Julie Scotney in a comment on the site about these tournaments. Julie supplied some additional details such as that the U18 tournament was started by the lady Mayor. Julie also asked if I had anything on the British Ladies tournament from 1976. I probably don’t have anything more than was covered by John Saunders in his Britbase article on the 1976 British Chess Championship, which was held in Portsmouth.
Being a local junior tournament I don’t have any games but if anyone has any of the games or additional information please let me know.
U18 Girls Challengers / U14 Championship
The two competitions were part of the one tournament. The U18 was dominated by Carey Groves who won all her games (she was 2nd in the 1976 British U-14 Girls championship, so was probably only 15 when this was held).
The U-14 competition was jointly won by Julie Scotney and Pauline Wragg, who both only lost to Carey. It was a shame these two did not play each other, but were worthy U-14 champions.
