Chiltern County Chess Matches 2013 / 14

Hampshire had a very busy chess season, playing in the West of England, Chiltern League and National stages. Adding all these matches (26!) would make this post too long, and therefore it will be split into separate articles. This post is to cover just the Chiltern League Open, U150 and U125 matches although that is still 14 matches. Full details on the Chiltern League Website.

One of the hopeful benefits of posting a season which is less than 10 years ago (written in 2023) is that I will know a lot more of the players. Although I was not playing county chess at this time (not much chess at all to be honest).

For the record of Hampshire County matches and links to any articles I have written the table on the Hampshire County Chess Matches page will detail these. The Hampshire County Chess History page summaries the leagues Hampshire have played in and the successes Hampshire have achieved. Both of these are available from the menu at the top of the site as well.

In the Open section Hampshire won two matches, drew two and lost two as Buckinghamshire ran away with the Championship, just dropping the one draw. Full details are included on the Chiltern League Website.

Chiltern League Open

Chiltern League U150

Hampshire won all six matches although the Championship title was not decided until the last match of the year, when Hampshire beat Oxfordshire. Full details are included on the Chiltern League website. Hampshire would go on to win the National U140 Championship in which a number of the players in the Chiltern League U150 would play in. This was a most impressive season for this team, which was captained by Ashraf Syed (as was the Chiltern League U150 team).

Chiltern U150 Table

Chiltern League U125

It seems this was to be the same as the Open and Under 150 championships with a home and away match against each County. However this did not happen and Hampshire only played the two matches, with one win and one loss. With Hampshire playing in the WECU as well as the Open and Under 150 this was a very busy schedule, and it was not unexpected that fulfilling all fixtures proved difficult.

Update: The Hampshire AGM Minutes had a bit more information on this and the Hampshire President (Chris Priest) attended the Chiltern League AGM where there was concern about the defaults of our Under-125 team. Chris had assured the Chiltern AGM that Hampshire would improve, but the following year we had the same issues with board defaults, and the U125 competition was soon disbanded (2014/15 was the last season). Personally, as mentioned running 2 teams in the WECU and 3 in the Chiltern was probably a bit too much (with the amount of matches).

Full details are included on the Chiltern League website.

Hants A v Bucks A – 5 Oct 2013

Hampshire started off playing Buckinghamshire at home and although the match was drawn I think they missed a chance to defeat them. This was Bucks weakest team of the season and Hampshire our graded them by 4 points. Hampshire had the benefit this season of two players graded 210 in Ian Thompson and Mark Broom, but they often faced similar rated opponents.

Hampshire winners were Mark Broom, Ivan Stipcevic, David Fowler, Gareth Aneurin Jones, Gillian Moore, Peter Dallas, Bob Cleave and Kevin Steele.

Hants A v Berks A – 26 Oct 2013

Hampshire met Berkshire also at home, and although their team was weaker than their team against Buckinghamshire, averaging 155 this was still stronger than the travelling Berkshire team. The Hampshire team being weaker than their first match as mainly down to the two 210 players not playing, as the strength in depth remained, with the first under 150 player was not until board 12.

Berkshire had two players graded over 210 in their team and in general out graded Hampshire on the top boards; but from board 6 onwards this trend started to turn with Hampshire fielding the stronger players. Hampshire managed to come out on top winning 11½ – 8½ win. Hampshire winners were Gareth Aneurin Jones, David Thompson, Barry Kocan, Bob Cleave, James Chilton and Kevin Steele.

Oxford A vs Hants A – 23 Nov 2013

The two players graded 210 returned for the Oxfordshire match (and both won) which meant Hampshire were stronger than the previous match. However Oxfordshire had a stronger team in total with no player graded under 150, which is very impressive for a 20 board match.

With this in mind the drawn match was a great result for Hampshire and the fact that Hampshire won on the top 4 boards was key. Hampshire winners were Ian Thompson, Mark Broom, Dominic Tunks, Bill McDougall, Fraser McLeod, Chris Priest, Jamie Chilton and Ray Hartley.

Hampshire’s team also included a future British Chess Champion (2022), Harry Grieve. He was playing his first of two games he played for Hampshire this year, both against the same opponent and he lost both games. Harry was only 12 at the time and already graded 152 and he played for Hampshire until 2016.

Bucks A vs Hants A 24 Jan 2014

The return match against Buckinghamshire saw them bring a much stronger team than the first one. Their board five in this match was playing on board one in the first match. Hampshire had a similar strength team on both matches, but this meant Bucks were averaging 11 rated points more than Hampshire.

The match was fairly close, but Bucks came out ahead 11½ – 8½. Hampshire winners were Dominic Tunks, David Fowler, Jonathan Young, Roy Ashmore and Frank Bonsey. Also noticeable was Stuart Knox’s draw on board 11 against Simon Finn (197), although he seems to have been on a lower board than his grade would have expected. This may be due to him returning to chess, as this was his first grade for 10 years (but it remained fairly constant in the 190’s).

Hants A vs Berks A – 22 Feb 2014

Berkshire were much stronger at home than their team which played in Hampshire (170 to 147) and included three players graded over 200. The strength in depth proved too much and Berkshire won 11½ – 8½, which was actually closer than you would expect from the grades difference.

Hampshire winners were Ivan Stipcevic, Michael Roberts, Jamie Chilton and Stephen LeFevre.

Hampshire’s last Open match of the season was against Oxfordshire, who brought a strong team to Hampshire with every player graded in excess of 150. An impressive win by Hampshire 11½ – 8½ with Ian Thompson, Mark Broom, Dominic Tunks, Bill McDougall, Fraser McLeod, Chris Priest, Jamie Chilton and Ray Hartley.

Moving onto the under 150 matches Hampshire’s first opponents were Buckinghamshire and both counties bought teams of the same strength, but Hampshire were comfortable 10 – 6 winners. Peter Dallas, John Watts, Ashraf Syed, Chris Smith, John Wiseman, John Davis and Brian Cochran were the Hampshire winners.

Hants U150 vs Berks U150 – 2 Nov 2013

Berkshire were Hampshire’s second opponents and Hampshire’s team was on par with their first match, but the travelling Berks had an average grade 12 points lower, which always makes for a tough challenge. Berkshire were very competitive though and only lost by 2 points. Hampshire winners in this match were Peter Dallas, Keith Bateman, Kevin Steele, Philip Gething and John Wiseman.

Oxfords U150 v Hants U150 7 Dec 2013

Hampshire travelled away to Oxfordshire for their third match and met an extremely strong under 150 team, with an average grade on 140! In fact it took until board 11 before Oxford dropped below 140. Hampshire had also beefed up their team averaging 137 with the bottom board graded 128.

Surprisingly Hampshire won the match by 11 points to 5. Gillian Moor, Phil Ash, Stephen Le Fevre, Bob Cleace, Jon Young, Tim Chapman, David Culliford, Roy Ashmore, Ashraf Syed and Jack Armorgie brought home the full points for Hampshire.

With this, Hampshire had won their first three matches and were looking to dominate the Under 150 Championship this year.

Hants U150 vs Oxford U150 – 22 Mar 2014

Looking at the final table, Hampshire went into this with five wins from five matches, but Oxford had won their other four matches, including a 13 – 3 win against Berkshire. Therefore Hampshire has to ensure they did not lose by more than 4 points to win the championship. In the end despite the closest match of the season Hampshire maintained their 100% record and won the Championship with their 8½ – 7½ match win.

Hampshire winners were Barry Kocan, Ewart Smith, Ashraf Syed, Tim Chapman and Bob Cleave (again!). Both teams were strong, Hampshire averaging 140 and Oxfordshire 137.

Oxford U125 vs Hants U125 – 24 Nov 2013

Alongside the Open, under 150 and WECU matches Hampshire also entered the Chiltern League Under 125 Championship. Only two matches were played and in the first one Hampshire also defaulted four boards in their 9 – 3 loss to Oxfordshire. It was probably a step too far to enter this competition, although I do not have any further details, but I presume Hampshire did think they could fulfil their match commitments?

Jonathan and Benjamin Perryman were the two Hampshire winners in the match.

Hampshire Player Performance – Chiltern League

According to my records 70 players represented Hampshire in the Chiltern League with two players playing in every Open and Under 150 match which is very impressive. Both these players scored 50% or more and Roy Ashmore managed 7½ points from his 12 games.

Bob Cleave probably had the best record with his 6½ points from 8 games, whilst Jamie Chilton and Dominic Tunks both scored 100% from their 4 and 3 games respectively. Kevin Steele and Peter Dallas results also scored heavily.

Summary

The highlight of the season was the Under 150 teams 100% record, with the core of the team which went on to win the National Under 140 title, which I will cover in a separate post. But it cannot be underestimated that the season allowed 70 Hampshire players to play County Chess. This is including a number who would not have been able to play in the WECU matches, either due to strength or location.

I am sure the Hampshire Captains had a logistical headache trying to ensure all County teams were able to field suitable players, and juggling the teams to ensure they were all competitive. They completed this successfully, and congratulations were due to Dominic Tunks (WECU), Fraser McLeod (Chiltern Open) and Ashraf Syed (Chiltern U150) who managed this task.

If anyone has anything to add please do let me know, especially games and recollections of the matches.
