Prior to 1893 Hampshire had played a number of friendly chess matches against Surrey, Sussex and Wiltshire. With the formation of the Southern Chess Counties Union (SCCU) in 1892 a SCCU championship was organised to be played in 1893 and 1894 to determine the SCCU Champion.
