Update on the original article – Paul has kindly supplied two articles from the Southern Evening Echo, which he has located. These articles detail the tournament, but also additional information on the ongoing SCL leagues, and other chess activities. As Paul noted it is interesting to see the prominence and detail given to chess on the sports pages.

The 1965 Hampshire Individual Chess Championship was held during the 1964/1965 season. Only 8 players entered, and 2 of these dropped out before and during the competition. Hampshire joined with Dorset to play in the 4th Western Counties Online Championships. We also invited Wiltshire, but no-one came forward and therefore it was mainly Hampshire, with three Dorset players who took on Somerset in the preliminary round of the KO tournament.
