The Southampton and Portsmouth Leagues held matches between each other from the 1950’s (as did Southampton against Bournemouth). A number of these are detailed in the Hampshire Bulletins, Roger Paige’s Hampshire Chess 1950 – 1970 book and the Portsmouth Evening News. The ones I have will not be the only ones played and I will update any additional ones I locate. It could be the SCL or PDCL records have information on these, but more than likely it will the the Portsmouth Evening News newspaper which will be of most use.
Photo above of the late Peter Marshall, who was a regular player for Southampton in these matches.
Southampton vs Portsmouth Chess Matches
The matches I have are below, several of which I have the individual results for, but others just the results. These started off as league matches, but over time Junior (or School) matches were also held. A number of well known local players represented the leagues in these matches. You may have played in some of these, or known players who did. Please let me know if you have any memories of them.

SCL 17½ – PDCL 12½ – 1954/55 – 27th Nov 1954
The first match I have with individual results is from the 1954/55 season which was held in Fareham. Portsmouth had won their first match (from the records I have) the previous year, but were unable to do the same this season. Southampton won by 5 points in the 30 board match.
Both teams were well represented with current Hampshire Individual (1953) Leslie Vine on board one for Southampton facing Wilf Pratten. Looking down the list I noticed Sir Roy Goode beating Marshall Thompson on board 2. Roy played in the 2023 and 2024 Hampshire Congress as a 90/91 year old, and as you expect of someone this age, is not the same strength as he used to be. But beating a player of the strength of Marshall Thompson is an indication of his peak ability.
On board 28 for Southampton was John Wilkinson, who would win the Hampshire Individual 10 years later, but who was probably 14 when this match was played.

Southampton vs Portsmouth 1959/60
Southampton were again successful in a close 20 board match, winning by three points. A heavyweight board one with DR AJ Pointon beating Marshall Thompson. Further down was David Drew who played for the Ordnance Survey Club. A number of juniors such as Gillian Moore, Arthur Brameld, PM Collins and John Jones were also playing.
David Drew along with his two John Drew were stalwarts of Ordnance Survey for a number of years and I played both of them in the 1990’s. I beat John but lost to the stronger David and give this game below.
The Portsmouth Chess club had the top six boards in the match, although Fareham won the PDCL Div 1 this year, the next 5 years this was won by either Portsmouth A or B.

Southampton vs Portsmouth 1960/61
Both the main league match and the School matches were available for this year. Portsmouth had a comfortable win in the 20 board league match, played in November 1960, whilst Southampton had the same in the School match in March 1961. A number of players played in both, especially for Portsmouth. In the School match St John’s College provided 9 players for the team.
The report in the Portsmouth Evening News stated that this was Portsmouth first win for 7 years in the league fixture (they had won 16 – 13 in 1953/54).

Southampton vs Portsmouth 1961/62
Just the individual result from the league match (there was a Schools match played as well, which Portsmouth won 19 – 11) where Portsmouth won 20 – 10. Southampton held their own on the top eight boards, but Portsmouth had the strength in depth in this 30 board match played in Southampton. Details on this will likely have been in the Portsmouth Evening News and I hope to update at a later date.
You can see a lot of the strong juniors in Portsmouth coming through from this match, with Roger Paige, Mike Dymond, Arthur Brameld, John Jones and Mike March all playing.

Southampton vs Portsmouth 1962/63
There was a big push from both sides this year for the fixture, as a fifty board match was held and the first 25 boards were detailed in Chess Notes (via Roger Paige’s book). Portsmouth won their third match in a row, with a 28 – 22 win. Terry Hollington was the Portsmouth League organiser.
I noticed John Wiseman and the late Paul Hurn, who were regular players in the Southampton League representing Southampton for the first time (from my records).

The League match was held this year, as well as the Juniors match.
In the 30 board league match Portsmouth won by the a single point. Les Allen played in this match and I had a number of tough games against Les over the years, normally ending in Les winning. I wonder if John Jones was a replacement player, as he was on bottom board and would have been graded in excess of 180.

In the Juniors match Portsmouth won by nine points. Certainly not many players from the Southampton team I recognise, but from the Portsmouth team Seth Saverymuttu, M Saverymuttu, Gerald Bennett (maybe) and current Southampton Chess League players Martin Newbury (Hamble) and Pat Pavey (Chandler’s Ford) were ones which I noticed.

Southampton vs Portsmouth 1968/69
Two matches played, but just the individual results from the junior match which Southampton won 23 – 17.
A few players that played later in the Southampton League, such as Tim Trant (I played him 5 times in the 1990’s) and Mike Gransden.
