Hampshire 2024 Chess Congress

The Hampshire Chess Association 2024 Congress was held at the Lysses Hotel in Fareham on the 1st to the 3rd November 2024 with a record 92 entries playing across three sections.

IM Petr Marusenko won the Open, defeating top seed FM James Merriman in the last round to finish on 4 points from his 5 games. Fareham’s Jack Wicken took home the Silver Rook Trophy and Hampshire Individual Championship on tie-break from the improving David Collyer (Southampton University), and long time entrant Dave Cordner (Southampton and Cosham) who were all half a point behind the winner. Five other players also finished level on 3½ points from the five rounds. David Collyer won the Len Walters trophy for the highest scoring player rated under 1950 (on tie-break).

The Open section was run as a FIDE rated event and we were very pleased to see 34 entrants, when only two years ago there were only 8. It was a great result by Jack Wicken, whose played well above his ECF 1878 rating, great things to come from this strong junior.

The Major was won by Tomas Wilamowski who just dropped the one draw, whilst three players finished in joint second. Tom Philidor took home the Peter Marshall Trophy for highest scoring player in the Major by a Hampshire players (again on tie-break from Richard Edney).

In the minor section, Basingstoke’s Megan Birch dominated, winner all five games. Along with the Parson’s Cup she also won the Gillian Moore Cup for best performance by a Hampshire lady in the Congress.
