This article is on stats from the Hampshire County Chess matches. This is up to the end of July 2025.
Hampshire County Chess Player Stats
Hampshire have played more than 1100 county chess games and although I do not have all the individual results I do have over 1000 of these. I have analysed the player’s performance and the below are some of the stats from the players who have played 10 or more games1
There will probably be a few small errors in the analysis, as this has been done roughly and as I am correcting the data as I go through the years. But on the whole this should be a fair representation of the data. I have included an excel file (subset of my main file) which has the data and also a pivot chart with slicers which allows more in-depth analysis if you so wish.
The table below allows filtering, searching and sorting. You can also amend the number of records visible, if you wish to see more data on the page.
As well as topping the table with number of games, Gillian Moore also tops the number of wins and number of years playing. She also has the most number of losses, but that is to be expected due to the number of games.

JH Blake
JH Blake played for Hampshire from 1887 to 1932 and as one of the most prominent Hampshire players I have expanded his data below. This excludes his adjudicated game against Kent’s A Howell from the 9th February 1895 match. Due to playing board one for all but two of the matches, Blake would often play another county’s strongest players several times. Apart from Surrey’s George Wainwright, who Blake had a poor record against, he scored heavily in these pairings.
